Influx of Crows in childbooks

Writers of children books has understood it! Crow is an exiting bird and there are a lot of possibilities in personal characters in the Crow. A Swedish paper shows that 15 new children books are involving crows and only 2 or 3 books involves Sparrow or Ducks.
Fabel Jacob is a character from the Utsira crow project. The third book was published on 7'th March on the day of Crows. Keep on writing about the most interesting bird!

Kråkeinvasjon i Svenske barnebøker!

Carl von Linnè - 300 years - an other hero online

The image “http://www.linnaeus.nu/Bilder/Linne/linne1.GIF” cannot be displayed, because it contains errors. An other great and older hero is soon celebrating 300 years. Carl August von Linnè is also online. The real grand man of taxa. The Scandinavian scientist most known as a botanist but also a number one in Nordic butterflies and moths. Every times I see a Twinflower Linnea borealis my thoughts goes to Carl August. His Lapland studies and his Norwegian disciples gave us a father person and the founder of Norwegian botanical heritage. Thus also worth wile a Norwegian celebration.

Charles Darwin online

Far behind Charles Darwin in field-book writing? At least in interestingness!
I've produced regular field-books since 1977. Then as a twelve years old kid. My 30-35 field books scanned would had counted 9000 pages (4500 pages in 2 sides scan) . My golden Utsira Birding Years 1992-2007 would had involved 1600 scanned pages in my digital library!

Photos: Scanned field book from 7. may 2004 Bee-eater and Nightingale and 1'st September 1979 with my first Red-throated Pipit.

Also produced field notes on plant-analysis on trips in Southern Norway and a field-notebook on moths/butterflies. There are not so many words in Darwin's pages as mine fieldbooks ;-) . E. g. Galapagos - field notes. But WOW, how interesting it is reeding Darwin's fieldnotes 125 years after his death.

Thanks for the interesting Darwin links in Norwegian Birdlife.

Added Snap today

Easier for you to find out whats behind the links. Snap tool tells you at once whats in the linked page. Get it here. Not so difficult in blogger. Go in to template and add the in the html immediately before 'left-arrow slash and head'. Snap is allso a fast search engine for pictures and webpages. You don't have to open all pages to find out what's you're looking for.

Not so easy to install in my Norwegian Opera blog. Any hint?

Snap links: my Picasa web my Utsira inhabitants web some of my feathers and a good feathers page.

And at last a great flashback tip GUIdebook from Eirik. Thanks for shearing! Remember my first work station a MS OS/2.30.1 shared with co worker in Utsira Municipal in 1992, my first DIR-trips in DOS, my fist SOSI formatted map at TDH in Bø in 1987 and so on (SOSI hasn't changed a lot since? compared with other stuff).

7'th March is the Crow Day - Kråkedag (in norw.)

Went out shooting a picture of me and some Hooded Crow. Just to remind us about the Crow's Day today! The Crows at Utsira are very special and intelligent. Naturally I'd to share my 'matpakke' with the Hooded today. Read more in my Flickr page.

The Crow has got a vital place in the Norwegian Folklore and old Weather-sign. Thus they are mystic, intelligent and always present. The old painters used the Crow as a sign of death. E.g as the Norwegian painter Th. Kittelsen Pesta motive.

An Utsira Crow who was partial melangistic and named 'white-wing' has become a main character in a Children Book 'Fabel Jakob' by Grete Randsborg Jenseg. The third book in the Fabel Jakob story is published today on the Crows Day! Fabel Jakob, havet og den lille melketanna

You can order the norwegian book here: Cappelen

Next Crow Day to watch out is the Crow's great 'Tingdag'. When the Crows are told to have their big meting, often in a huge tree. 12'th of March is St. Gregors Messe . On the 'primstav' an old calendar, there is a sign of a Dove. But in Norway this is misunderstood as a Crow! Thus there is a lot of signs and marks related on this day too.

Good luck with your publishing event today Grete.

Detailed old map from the Utsira farm Hovland 1871

This hand drawn map was made in 1871 by Philipe A. Hilmers. The map is very esthetic and see how detailed it is compared with an ortophoto from 2004. Working with maps and planning it's inspiring to find some of these maps in the archive.

Utsira is the Blocker King

Latest issue of the Swedich Rare Bird Magazine 'Road Runner' for Club 300 has listed up blockers between Sweden, Denemark, Norway and Finland. The Nordic Blockerlist is an interesting paper!

The paper however do'nt summarise the blockers between the contries. But pictures tells more than words? Seven of Seventeen blocker-photos were from Utsira.
Among these are: Pallas's Grasshopper Warbler, Brown Shrike, Masked Shrike, Sibirian Rubythroat, Pechora Pipit and my picture of the Thick-billed Warbler.

Say no more....

Opera a lot more than a web-reader

Snapshot of my opera-page in Opera-view. Opera involves more than just a web-reader it's a whole community. With own blogs, photo pages and so on. Download opera
I'm impressed but can't cut the wire to Mozilla Firefox yet.
Like and Dislikes:

It's fast and yesterdays pages are fast up and down in one click. Magic stick arranges all passwords. You get a free blog, free photopage, and a link out to other opera members. (moust people nowdays has a Blogger, Flicker, and/or a Google account - Operea can be all in one) , and it's a Norwegian product!

Cant' open my Google calendar and not so helpful in general in Google-society, such as picasa pictures direct to this Blogger blog. In Plone (my web-publisher) opera does not show my kupu-editor or the FCK editor in the older 2.1 plone version. But still it's very interesting. And probably first choice if I had a laptop?

Kvit-vingen på Svensk

Kvit-vingen var på Utsira høsten 2002 til våren 2003. Sist sett 16. januar 2003.

Plone 3,0 in March 2007!

Plone 3,0 looks promising indeed!

We'll (Utsira Municipal portals) wait for the versioning tool So why bother uppdate too 2,5?

Zope in bottom layer and Plone on the top layer, is the future! Other top layers are: Silva and Nuxeo

New Year and in need of sorting out your mind?

FreeMind is the answer!
(free download track your languae, my winsnap photo show menu in Norwegian)

Best tool for a planning ingeneer. It's ideal for brainstorming, sorting out huge data announts and a platform before the large office document. In the free ver. you can rotate freely, numberise and export to html, copy and past in an office document.. wola you've got an indexed draft to use in Word or other Office tools. Mind mapping is an old tradition fist known by Porphyry (greek philosopher).

I use it a lot and it's highly recomended by me! Winsnap photo is taken from first draft of ITplan in Utsira Municipal.

Originally uploaded by atgrims.
At least I solved the squear format problem in picasa. My favorite picture editor picasa don't support 100% square croping tools!

Tell you how? Perhaps an other time?

A click on the picture will lead you to my flickr-page.

Actually it's the preinstalled Jasc Paint Shop Poto Album 4.0 deliverered on my Dell. Where I can crop squares in open view. Still Picasa is the Best!

One bird makes a lot of fuss - Sykes's Warbler

This bird was the first known Sykes's Warbler in Norway. It's origeon and final statment has been interesting and ended as a paper in 2005. I'm greatfull for Lars Svenssons ecpertise and help.

Original paper is publiced here

Summary:

Sykes Warbler Hippolais rama new to Norway at Mønstermyr nearby Flekkefjord in Vest-Agder County, the 20. September 1997.

Being situated resident at Utsira it’s regarded as direct stupid to leave the island in end of September. But life is empty without a trip to Flekkefjord in Vest-Agder my home county. Need too have a week with studies of migrating Raptors and take part in ringing activity at Mønstermyr, my local patch in Flekkefjord. This trip resulted in a ringed Sykes Warbler and new specie for Norway .

Only three weeks earlier I had sighted the third record of Booted Warbler for Utsira on the 29. and 31. August. 1997. The Mønstermyr – bird showed similarities with the Booted Warbler on Utsira in coloration, white on outermost tail-feathers and light edgings on secondaries. But the bird also showed total difference in jizz, shape and colour of bill, and primary projection. When the bird was realised it came with a soft Silvia-like ’tak’ sound.

Measurements, size, and shape of bill concluded that the bird showed character of a Syke’s Warbler.

The paper also involves geographical dispersal, and other records in Western parts of Western Palearctic. The paper involves accepted Syke’s Warblers, birds with staus like Syke’s/Booted, and Syke’s like birds accepted as Booted Warblers.

The identification are based on:

1. The Acro-impression, jizz and structure with flat forehead fine and long bill. Angrier faced expression due to flat forehead, light on lores, short supercilium, in field without coronal-stripe and broken and not obvious eye-ring. Total different from the more kindly expression of Booted Warbler that shows more Phylloscopus-impression

2. Shape and structure of bill, bright yellow out on tip of under-mandible.

3. White edgings on outermost tail feather, and light wing-panel on secondaries.

4. Longer primary-projection than the Booted Warbler at Utsira..

A short introduction of my local patch in Flekkefjord:

The former mire/marshland are newly opened with open dikes and are today a landscape for producing grass for cattle. Mønstermyr stands out as a green oasis in the gold coastal landscape 300 meters above sea level. There are free sights to Lista fyr in Vest-Agder County and Sokendal in Rogaland County . During the autumn seasons from 1990 to 1995 there are ringed over 32.600 birds which gives 97 birds’ pr day. Main species are Willow Warbler, Redpoll, Goldcrest, Robin, Reed Bunting, and Redwing all represented with over 2000 ind. during the six years. My local patch has also produced three firsts for Vest-Agder County : one Arctic Warbler ringed 1. Sept. 1991, one Yellow-breasted Bunting ringed 2. Sept. 1991, and an Olive-backed Pipit ringed on the 25. Sept. 1993. Mønstermyr is also one of Norway ’s best sites for counting migrating Raptors. During autumn seasons 1990 to 1995 there passed over 8000 migrating Raptors.

My Favoritebird -The Hooded Crow

Hooded Crow Corvus corone cornix has been a projectbird for Utsira Birding station since 1993. We've colourringed chics in their nest since 93 and a total of 79 chics and two adults has been ringed up to year 2000. I've done a tribute to the Hooded crow on the municipal web. And presented the ringing data here. red (Killed), black (no records of chics since 1999), seen last in year 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, and 2006.

Main results from the project: (read: 'seems to' or 'major tends shows..')
The chics stay in their nesting territoials until they are getting into their p
uberty 2 years old, supporting in their parens task, surch as finding food an beeng aggressive into intuders. (I've made a sycklic-Hooded-Crow-yearclock wich shows when agression take part. In winthertime all Crows cooporate and do'nt defend a territorial).
Their parents are "Apha-pairs" and stays together as long they live (about 20-25 years?) There are about 15 breeding pairs at Utsira. And the best alphapairs breeds 4 chics a year. Staturs report is publiced in Yearbok 00-01 of Utsira Birdstation. Only two Utsira chicks has been found at Mainland in Haugesund killed two and four years old.
Intra harmony (may-late august) harmony among relatives in the territorial.
Inter harmony (november-mid february) harmony among all crows (exept weak indiviuals who get killed by other crows!).
highest aggresion period (in mid february-may) Aggression towards non territorial crows (the young mob) and less aggresion periode september-november aggession towards their chics (prepearing them for what's to come?)

The SoutWestEuropeean subspecie Carrion Crow Corvus corone corone are also represented in high numbers at Utsira and we think that they are Scottish or Shetlenders youngsters who are been defeted by their parents an yonger brothers/sisters from their home terriotorials som later than the Hooded Crow in april/may (Hooded in february/march)
